Passive Solar Design

Passive Solar design has become a standard component in energy conscious architecture. The over riding concept of passive solar is quite simple. Let the sun shine into areas that you want to keep warm, and keep the cold outdoor air insulated from those same spaces. When the weather is hot, shade the windows that give access to all that wonderful sunshine so that the sun which keeps you warm in the winter does not drive you out in the summer.

Implementing passive solar technique into buildings that are functional, comfortable and beautiful can be a less simple process. That is where Silverwood Design comes in. Open spaces directly affected by solar gain areas can be fantastic living spaces when carefully thought out. Some areas of a home are best placed on the least sunny side. Shading the West is a critical component of keeping the harsher side of passive solar in line. Roof overhangs need to have their projection calculated, and then be incorporated into the design in a manner that is pleasing to the eye. Warm in the winter, cool in the summer, beautiful all year 'round is the goal. Here are some links that will give you a more technical view. Silverwood Design has been doing passive solar well for 35 yrs.
